Dictablandas and Democraduras: Romania’s Way from Dictatorship towards Democracy

In December 1989, Romania witnessed the most violent of all anticommunist revolutions in Eastern Europe. Why was Romania the blatant exception to the rule of “Velvet Revolution”? This lecture / round-table starts from three premises:

  • Nothing is harder than to determine the historicsignificance of events when they are happening
  • History rarely travels in straight lines
  • There is no blueprint for democracy

The guest speaker and his hosts analyse the fabric of a potential fully-fledged democracy in Romania.

Although “the preferred form of governmentfor some, democracy is still in the works for many, especially in countries were “the political kleptocrat appears to be the
quintessential player produced by the painful, long hang-over of the post-communist era”. And to this rule, Romania is no exception.
